FAQs
-
A data center, at its most basic, is a physical facility housing the servers, networking equipment, storage systems, and power and cooling infrastructure that make the internet, cloud computing, artificial intelligence, and virtually every modern digital service possible.
-
A moratorium is a temporary pause imposed by local government on issuing new development approvals, like zoning permits or building permits for a set period. A moratorium does not halt approved development projects or adopted rezonings.
A moratorium is intended to allow time to assess infrastructure capacity, noise impacts, and other environmental concerns about data centers before additional development proceeds. -
Senate Bill 730:
The most recent bill in the North Carolina legislature regarding data center development is Senate Bill 730, also known as the Ratepayer Protection Act, which aims to impose regulations on data centers and requires them to cover their own energy and infrastructure costs. This bill has advanced through the legislature and addresses various concerns related to the impact of data centers on local communities and the environment.
